Third Time’s a Card for Golfer Bob Burns

Former Cal State Northridge standout Bob Burns, who won the NCAA Division II individual golf championship in 1990, earned his PGA Tour card at qualifying school Monday in Palm Springs.

It was Burns’ third attempt at PGA qualifying school.

Burns led all qualifiers entering the last of six qualifying rounds and finished 11th overall. Burns, 25, played the past two seasons on the Nike Tour after turning pro in 1991.

He was one of 46 players in a field of 191 to earn a tour card. Burns, a 1986 graduate of Kennedy High who later played at Mission College, finished 31st in earnings last season on the Nike Tour at $51,000.

College Football

Cal State Northridge tailback Robert Trice was named most valuable offensive player and linebacker Angel Chavez won the defensive award in voting by the Matador football team.

Trice, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound senior, rushed for 1,362 yards, the third-highest season total in school history. Trice, an All-American West Conference first-team selection, also led the team in scoring with 62 points.

Chavez, a 6-foot, 230-pound senior, was named the AWC’s defensive player of the year by a vote of conference coaches. Chavez made 74 tackles (40 solo) and had seven sacks.

High School Soccer

The Grant High girls’ soccer team, which advanced to the City Section final last season, has a new coach, John Robb.

Robb coached the girls’ team at Granada Hills last season and replaces David O’Ravez, who moved from the area in September. O’Ravez also was the Lancers’ baseball coach last season. Jeremy Lawrence, the junior varsity coach last season, is Grant’s new baseball coach.

Replacing Robb at Granada Hills is Michelle Farish, a former Highlander player.

High School Baseball

The hardship eligibility petitions of former Faith Baptist High baseball players Chad Evanson, Clint Marcus and Mike Jimenez were again tabled by the City Section, pending the receipt of statements from Faith Baptist administrators.

All three are seniors who have filed financial hardship petitions. The cases will not be heard until January. Evanson and Jimenez now attend Chatsworth; Marcus attends El Camino Real.

High School Basketball

Lisa Magorien has returned as Chaminade High girls’ basketball coach after a one-year maternity leave. She replaced Gene Ellen Rogers, who led the team to a 12-10 record last season.

Miscellany

Dawn Burton and Armando Lerma have been selected athletes of the month for November by the Cal State Northridge Student-Athlete Congress.

Burton, a freshman diver, surpassed the NCAA qualifying dual-meet standard on both the one-and three-meter boards with scores of 272.55 and 300.75 on Nov. 13 against Pepperdine and Nevada.

Lerma, a freshman from Coachella, competed in his first NCAA cross-country regional meet Nov. 13 and completed the 10-kilometer course in 34 minutes 36.8 seconds to finish 89th at Lewis River Golf Course in Woodland, Wash.

North Valley Youth Baseball League has scheduled a clinic on Sunday for boys and girls ages 7 to 15. Instructors will include former St. Genevieve High pitcher Roland De La Maza, now in the Cleveland Indians’ organization, and Steve Smith, manager of the Seattle Mariners’ Class-A affiliate in Calgary. Registration: $15.

The third L.A. Hanukkah Run is scheduled for Sunday at Woodley Park in Encino. The event will include a 5K run/walk, a 10K run and a 1K family children’s run/walk. Events begin at 1 p.m.
