SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Consider it a word of warning to the Crespi High basketball team.

Bishop Montgomery cruised to a 68-42 victory over the Celts Wednesday night in a championship division quarterfinal game of the El Segundo tournament at El Segundo High.

And Bishop Montgomery Coach Doug Mitchell says he still has more tricks in store when the teams meet Wednesday in a Mission League opener.

“We wanted to win, but we didn’t want to show them everything we had,” Mitchell said. “We kept it simple. We didn’t press or run some things. I’m sure they’re going to show us some new things too next time.”

A new game plan for Crespi might be in order.

The Celts managed only two field goals in the second and third quarters as Bishop Montgomery overcame a seven-point first-quarter deficit to open a 43-28 lead after three quarters.

The Knights put the game away with an 15-2 run during a 2 minute 46 second span to increase their lead to 60-35 with 3:25 to play.

“We were a little soft on them in the beginning,” Bishop Montgomery guard Jayson Sanders said. “We were holding back and could have done a lot more to them.”

Sanders, a 6-foot-1 senior, had 21 points to lead four Bishop Montgomery players in double figures.

Eric Bingham and Kareem Mutrie scored 14 and 12 points each and Brandon Price added 10 for Bishop Montgomery (2-0), which will play Mira Costa in a semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

“We got a good look at Crespi tonight,” Mutrie said. “They’ll be out to get us, but we’ll be out for them too.”
