Beverly Hills : Talks OKd on Post Office

Share

The City Council agreed Tuesday to begin a one-year period of exclusive negotiations with the U.S. Postal Service to buy or lease the old main post office across from City Hall.

Postal officials notified the city in April that they wanted to keep their retail and mailbox services in the historic building, but asked the city if it was interested in taking over the unused space in the structure.

The building, located between two city-owned parking lots at 469 N. Crescent Drive, served as the city’s main post office from 1933 until the new postal facility opened on Maple Drive in 1991.

Since the Postal Service’s announcement, Vice Mayor Vicki Reynolds has campaigned for the city to preserve the old post office, which has murals and a marble lobby, and use it as a visitor and cultural center.

Under Reynold’s proposal, the city would establish a nonprofit, public benefit corporation to raise money for the facility.
