VENTURA : Warning Issued for Swells, High Tides

A combination of a large west swell and extremely high tides could threaten coastal properties in Ventura County this weekend, the National Weather Service said.

The Weather Service issued a tidal overflow warning for coastal areas in Ventura County in effect Saturday and Sunday, said Scott Entrekin, a meteorologist with the service.

The periods of greatest risk, said Entrekin, are at high tide Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Saturday’s highest tide will be 6.9 feet around 7 a.m.; Sunday’s highest tide will be 7 feet a little after 8 a.m. The high tides will be accentuated by a 10- to 12-foot west swell, said Rae Strange, a forecaster for Pacific Weather Analysis in Santa Barbara.

Strong winds could add even more push to Saturday and Sunday’s high tides, further threatening coastal property, Strange said.

But, he added, that the abundance of sand on Ventura’s beaches will likely provide a buffer to the large waves.

Caltrans said that the large waves and high tides could cause some traffic problems along the Ventura Freeway near the Rincon in northern Ventura County.

During big swells, waves breaking on the rock groin along the highway often splash onto the roadway and surprise southbound motorists. Officials are recommending drivers proceed with caution.
