Use of Ineligible Player Costs San Fernando Two Victories

Share

Use of an ineligible player has forced the San Fernando High basketball team to forfeit two victories, dropping the team’s record from 3-2 to 1-4.

Kevin Hawkins, a senior reserve guard, this week was declared ineligible for the remainder of the season when school officials discovered that he had falsified a mandatory physical examination.

The Tigers, who learned of the transgression Tuesday, have forfeited victories over Highland and L.A. High. San Fernando’s 74-73 win over Monroe on Wednesday is the Tigers’ lone victory.

Hawkins was academically ineligible the past two seasons, but raised his grade-point average to an acceptable level.

“The irony is he pulls this and he’s ineligible again,” San Fernando Coach Dick Crowell said. “He didn’t want to be inconvenienced to go see a doctor--or pay a doctor. I don’t know which.”
