1992-93: 12-4, 6-1 in the Sea View League; lost to Paso Robles in first round of Division III section playoffs.
Key returners: Joel Finch, Jr., 135; Peter Koshy, Sr., 145; Tim Leng, Sr., 125; Bobby Omid, Sr., 189; Tim Putman, Sr., 160; James Stephenson, Sr., 152; Koh Yamada, Sr., 119.
Key newcomers: Jimmie Alvarez, So., 130; Greg Chatterton, Jr., 160; Ben Shipp, Sr., 112.
Outlook: Irvine is ranked higher in preseason polls, but with 15 returners and varsity experience at every weight class, University has the bodies for what Stewart believes could be a league championship--their dual meet is Jan. 11--and a top-five section finish. “Overall, we’re more solid in every weight class,” Stewart said. “The practice room is much more competitive than last year. We have wrestle-offs every week.” Transfers Chatterton (Temecula Valley) and Shipp (Texas) bumped previous starters out of varsity spots. The Trojans will look to Stephenson--their only state qualifier last season--and Yamada for leadership.
