Culver City police, helped by residents who saw televised appeals for information, Thursday night arrested a man who is wanted in the strangling of four suspected prostitutes.

“We started getting information from people right after the 4 o’clock news . . . and suddenly we got two tips going to the same location, so we figured it must be pretty good,” Lt. Ellis Smith said.

With several unmarked cars stationed around the intersection of 14th Street and Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica, the suspect, Michael Hubert Hughes, was spotted on foot about 11:55 p.m., Smith said.

“He was taken into custody pretty much without incident,” Smith said.

Based on information from a witness, Hughes, 37, was identified earlier Thursday as a suspect in the killings of at least four women. Three bodies were found in Culver City and one was found in Jesse Owens Park in Los Angeles.
