UCLA Is Perfectly at Ease in Dispatching Long Beach : College basketball: No. 9 Bruins improve to 4-0 with 93-51 rout of the 49ers.

Shon Tarver scored 16 points, and No. 9 UCLA remained unbeaten and kept its record against Long Beach State perfect with a 93-51 victory Saturday at Pauley Pavilion.

Freshman Charles O’Bannon added 15 points, his brother, Ed, had 14 and Tyus Edney collected 12 to lead the Bruins.

UCLA (4-0) held Long Beach to only 36.4 percent shooting and outrebounded the 49ers, 46-22. Long Beach State (4-2) has not beaten UCLA in eight games spanning 24 years.

The Bruins scored 60 points in the second half, and shot 63.2% for the game. Poor free-throw shooting had plagued the Bruins in three previous games, and they sank 20 of 30 against Long Beach.

Both teams started poorly and had trouble holding the ball, combining for 24 first-half turnovers. UCLA eventually warmed up, but Long Beach made only 6 of 22 shots in the half.

Terrence O’Kelley hit a 3-pointer to pull the 49ers to within 12-11, but Long Beach scored only four more points as the Bruins finished the half with a 21-4 surge to lead 33-15 at intermission.

Mike Atkinson led Long Beach with 15 points.
