Joanne Stanton has been elected president of the Anaheim Union High School District Board of Trustees.

Stanton, who has been a board member for 14 years, was elected by her board colleagues last week to a one-year term as president. She replaces R.A. (Molly) McGee.

Stanton, an Anaheim homemaker, said the president’s job is “to pull the board together and help us address next year’s budget concerns.”

The 24,000-student district has 17 schools and serves Cypress, most of Anaheim and portions of Buena Park and Stanton. It has a $170-million annual budget.

A key issue facing the district is balancing the budget. Supt. Cynthia F. Grennan said the state may not give a cost-of-living increase next year in the amount of money it provides for each student.

Stanton said she also wants to use her position to bolster the district’s vocational education program, especially with the state giving vocational education a higher priority.

“This is an opportunity to improve the education of all of our children,” Stanton said.
