BURBANK : Anti-Gang Dress Code Being Readied
An anti-gang dress code policy approved by the Burbank School Board will take effect in the city’s schools Jan. 1.
Police and school officials will be working together to draw up a list of gang-related clothes that will be banned from campuses.
The action is made possible by a new law signed by Gov. Pete Wilson that allows school districts to ban the baseball caps, bandannas, baggy pants and other attire associated with gangs.
The district has no current uniform policy against gang-style dress. Rules to limit such clothing were imposed at individual schools.
Two years ago, a 15-year-old girl at Burbank High School was suspended for two days for wearing a sweat shirt with lettering that school officials regarded as a gang symbol--even though the shirt had been made in memory of a classmate who had been shot to death.
The suspension was rescinded by Pierce after a protest was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union contending that the girl’s First Amendment right to free speech had been violated.
