It’s not just a gift suggestion, Inspector Jim Glew said. “More fires occur during the cold months, mainly because of heater problems.” Typical mistakes: skipping maintenance and storing household items too close. . . . A $5 smoke alarm can save lives--if it’s hooked up. “Some people disconnect them because cooking smoke sets them off,” firefighter Ron Duran said.
