Marvin Goodwin will be seeking to accelerate his future when UCLA plays Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.

Goodwin, the Bruins’ strong safety, is a junior who has contacted NFL teams and is considering forgoing his senior season and taking his chances a year early in the draft.

“I’ve had a good season, and I think now might be a good time,” he said. “I’m still collecting information and I’ll make a decision when I think the time is right.”

Goodwin is UCLA’s leader in tackles with 76 and pass interceptions with six.

“I’m flat broke,” he said. “It’s tempting to leave, and you just want to go for that money because I’ve been struggling for the last four years.”

What’s most impressive about the Bruins? Speed, Wisconsin Coach Barry Alvarez said. “You don’t have pluggers like you do in the Big Ten,” he said. “You have thoroughbreds who are going to run around for a while. They’re just different kinds of athletes. They’ve got better speed than the Big Ten schools.”

Bruin fullback James Milliner is doubtful for the Rose Bowl. He was injured at Oregon State on Oct. 23, the diagnosis being a deep calf bruise, and came back to play ineffectively against Arizona State and USC, carrying the ball once in each game. A second round of X-rays has revealed a hairline fracture. Punt returner Paul Guidry is still recovering from an ankle sprain suffered against Arizona State on Nov. 13.

Carl Greenwood sprained an ankle in a weekend practice but his recovery is expected quickly. . . . UCLA is on a winning streak of eight bowl games. Florida State also has won eight in a row. The record is nine, set by USC in 1923-45. . . . Wisconsin is 1-5 in bowl games, 0-3 in the Rose Bowl.
