Misfiring Again, Fullerton Loses to Colorado St.

Share

You could track Cal State Fullerton around Colorado this week by following the Titans’ trail of missed shots.

Fullerton shot only 37.7% against Colorado State on Thursday, lost, 87-70, before 4,793 and headed home wondering what it will take to shoot straight again.

“Our shooting was pathetic,” Coach Brad Holland said. “Part of the reason was their defense and part of the reason was we made some bad decisions.”

Among those lately, it seems, is shooting at any point in the game. The Titans shot only 35% in a 79-69 loss against Colorado at Boulder on Tuesday and shot 27% (nine of 33) in the first half Thursday. The week’s total in Colorado: 36%.

“We really stressed holding them to 35% from the field,” said Joe Vogel, Colorado State center. “We really thought that our defense would step up.”

Holland, looking for the right formula from his thin, nine-man unit, started 6-foot-9 David Frigout in place of freshman Josh King for the first time. But Frigout, nursing a bad cold, made only two of eight shots and finished with seven points and five rebounds.

Winston Peterson led Fullerton (1-5) with 21 points and James French had 15. Jeff Shelley had 22 for Colorado State (6-2).
