COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY BOWL REPORT : ORANGE : Seminoles Feeling Pressure of Game

Share

The top-ranked Florida State Seminoles rolled into Miami on Sunday and brought a few butterflies with them. Coach Bobby Bowden’s team held a one-hour practice at Miami in preparation for a New Year’s night showdown against No. 2 Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.

“There’s a little bit more pressure on this game than any of the past bowls we’ve been to,” Bowden said. “We’ve never gone into a bowl where you can win the national championship if you win this game. It’s always been a case where somebody else already had it wrapped up.

“So there’s a little different scare in you.”

The Seminoles have yet to finish No. 1 despite an NCAA record eight consecutive bowl victories. Because of the past success on New Year’s Day, Bowden made few alterations in his approach and the team’s routine for the coming week.

“The only change is that mentally the players are a little more conscious of what this game means,” he said.

Nebraska linebacker Trev Alberts participated in contact drills, his most physical workout since suffering a dislocated elbow in the final regular-season game against Oklahoma.

Three Seminoles rejoined practice after being sidelined because of knee injuries--receiver Matt Frier, center Clay Shiver and tailback Marquette Smith.
