WEST HILLS : Jewish Center to Close for Repairs

Share

The Bernard Milken Jewish Community Campus in West Hills will temporarily close for repairs early next year, sending thousands who use educational, counseling, recreational and other services there to temporary sites.

The repairs of leaks in the roof and possible reinforcement of the 6-year-old structure for earthquake safety is expected to take at least six months, said John Fishel, executive vice president of the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles, which operates the campus.

“It’s disappointing to have to do this,” Fishel said. “But we’re taking action to do the necessary construction work to ensure the safety of everyone who uses the campus.”

Fishel said the council will find temporary sites nearby or in trailers at the West Hills campus for the West Valley Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Family Service, the Jewish Vocational Service and other programs that provide education, day care and senior citizen services.

The council will decide whether to reinforce the building after further inspection, he said.

Council President Terry Bell said it was unclear why the building was not properly reinforced for earthquake safety when it was completed in 1987.

“Apparently, it just needs some more work,” Bell said. “We’re being extra careful because this building is used by seniors and children.”
