Man Sues School, Teammates, Says Prank Caused Injuries

A former star athlete at Calvary Chapel High School has sued the school, its basketball coaches and former teammates for allegedly throwing him overboard from a sailboat during a school trip to Honolulu.

The lawsuit was filed by Chase J. Lubbock, who was a star basketball and baseball player for the private Christian school and under 18 when the incident happened.

Lubbock’s action states that he hit his head on the vessel. The athlete suffered “severe and substantial injuries and damages” as a result of the prank, according to the suit.

The incident occurred Dec. 30, 1991, when the basketball team went to Hawaii to participate in a basketball tournament, said the lawsuit.

Lubbock claims the school’s two basketball coaches, identified as Steve Middleton and Mike Olmsted, “engaged . . . in horseplay” and caused Lubbock to be thrown into the ocean.

Lubbock struck his head on the way down, the lawsuit states.

School officials did not return calls for comment Wednesday.
