COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY BOWL REPORT : FREEDOM BOWL : Honored Morton Wins More Praise

Share

USC wide receiver Johnnie Morton made All-American teams selected by the Associated Press, Kodak, the Football Writers Assn., the Sporting News and Football News.

And he scored points with Coach John Robinson’s for his character.

Speaking of Morton’s bout with tonsillitis the week of the UCLA game, Robinson said: “When you consider how lean he was to start with and the fact he came back and played at a high level after losing 13 pounds, it tells you something of his character.”

Morton, to no one’s surprise, was selected USC’s most valuable player at the team’s awards banquet.

For the record: USC recruit Richard Beattie is from Glendale College, not Bakersfield College.

Utah will have about 15,000 fans at the game tonight, about 10,000 fewer than Fresno State had at last year’s game. Freedom Bowl officials are hoping for a crowd of 40,000.

Robinson, on the three plays at the UCLA three on USC’s last possession in the 27-21 loss on Nov. 20: “I called every one of them. The pass play was a lousy call. I’ll go to my grave with those three calls.”
