COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cal Lutheran Matches Its Record Start

Jason Smith recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Derrick Clark added 16 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots as Cal Lutheran rolled to a 91-78 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday night in the opening round of the Cal Lutheran tournament.

Cal Lutheran improved to 8-0 with the victory, matching the record-setting start of the 1983-84 Kingsmen basketball team.

Cal Lutheran meets the Concordia-Pacific Lutheran winner at 7 tonight for the tournament championship.

Paul Tapp came off the bench to score 14 points, and Damon Ridley (13 points) and Rupert Sapwell (10) also scored in double figures for Cal Lutheran, which held the Gusties to 39% shooting from the field.

Scott Larson led all scorers with 21 points for Gustavus Adolphus (2-3).

CS Bakersfield 73, The Master’s 62--James Mosley scored 15 points and Emeka Okenwa added 14 points and seven rebounds, but the Mustangs could not overcome a 23-for-62 shooting performance from the field in a semifinal game of the Cal State Chico tournament.

The loss snapped the Mustangs’ (11-3) winning streak at seven games and was their second loss in seven games to an NCAA Division II team this season.

Bakersfield (11-2), the defending Division II champion, was led by Kenny Warren’s 18 points.

Reggie Phillips, a former Ventura College standout, added 15 points for the Roadrunners.

Riverside 83, Valley 68--The Tigers (15-4) opened the second half with a 15-3 run to take a 16-point lead and went on to beat Valley (7-9) in the championship game of the College of the Desert tournament.

The loss broke a two-game winning streak for Valley, which beat Golden West and Citrus in the opening rounds.

Darryle Flicking scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the second half and was named he tournament’s most valuable player.

Valley, which trailed, 32-28, at halftime was led by Kenyth Henry with 14 points and Troy McLeod with 12.

Camp Pendleton 105, Glendale 92--Sophomore guard Ryan Asplund made four three-point baskets and scored a game-high 24 points, but Glendale (8-5) fell in the semifinals of the Palomar tournament.

Mike Macchia added 17 points for Glendale.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 76, Antelope Valley 61--Nicole Baynes scored 16 points to lead the Monarchs (6-10) past Antelope Valley in a consolation game of the Fullerton tournament.

Baynes, the only sophomore on Valley’s team, hit six of nine shots from the field and had four assists and four steals. Vonya Dangerfield scored 12 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Cicely Brewster had 11 and 16, respectively.

Margo Stanley scored a game-high 21 points for the Marauders, who never led.

Valley, which lost to Cypress in the quarterfinals, will face El Camino today at noon for fifth place.
