HELPFUL HINTS: CMJ New Music Monthly--a new consumer guide-- has come up with the ultimate reader-friendly way of evaluating new releases.

Besides giving you its opinion of the album, the magazine gives you the names of other acts with a similar sound or style. For instance, Afghan Whigs’ “Gentlemen” (Elektra) is recommended if you like Dinosaur Jr. and Neil Young.

The magazine, published by the same New York company that publishes the trade publication CMJ New Music Report, has a sometimes wry, sometimes dead-on take on what acts would appeal to what fans.

* The Pet Shop Boys’ “Very” is recommended to fans of Donna Summer, Village People and “Saturday Night Fever.”

* Dave Alvin’s “Museum of Heart”: Fans of Los Lobos, John Hiatt.

* P.J. Harvey’s “4-Track Demos”: Fans of Yoko Ono, Patti Smith.

* Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ “Live Seeds”: Fans of Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and William Faulkner.

And our favorite: The Cure’s “Show” is recommended to fans of . . . the Cure.
