Boston College quarterback Glenn Foley was true to form Saturday, and so was Virginia.

Foley, who has broken several of Doug Flutie’s school records, broke or tied most of the four-year-old Carquest (formerly Blockbuster) Bowl’s passing marks in leading the No. 15-ranked Eagles to a 31-13 victory over the Cavaliers.

“It’s been a good ride for me. This was a fitting end to my college career,” Foley said after Boston College (9-3) scored its first bowl victory in seven seasons.

Virginia (7-5) lost its fourth consecutive bowl game, and defensive end Mike Frederick said: “We’re sick of ending our year like this all the time. This takes all the fun out of it.”

The Cavaliers were limited to 85 yards rushing, 213 passing.

Foley needed less than three quarters to set a bowl record for passing yardage. He also set a record for attempts and equaled completion and touchdown marks. Foley, who displaced Flutie as Boston College’s career leader in passes, with 1,275, and touchdowns, with 72, finished the game with 391 yards on 25-of-36 passing.

The Eagles set bowl records for points and yards, with 557.

“Glenn did a super job,” Boston College Coach Tom Coughlin said. “The ninth win means a lot for us.”

Virginia Coach George Welsh said: “That’s as good a pass offense and as good a pocket passer as we’ve seen in a while. He just kept hitting them. You have to get a pass rush on Foley to slow him down, and we just didn’t.”

Virginia lost for the fifth time in seven games. “I think we were ready to play,” Welsh said. “I thought the preparations were all right. And I thought we played well for a half. We just didn’t play a full 60 minutes.”

There were three lead changes in the first half before an announced crowd of 38,516, by far the smallest in the bowl’s brief history.

Foley, the game’s most valuable player, put the Eagles ahead to stay, 17-13, with a five-yard touchdown pass to Clarence Cannon with 3:42 left in the first half.

Midway through the third quarter, Foley directed a 70-yard drive that ended when he connected with Keith Miller, who got behind linebacker Tom Burns for a 46-yard scoring play.

Darnell Campbell closed the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown burst on the opening play of the fourth quarter. Campbell led all rushers with 99 yards in 22 carries.
