When a cook at the Orange County Jail told Matthew Olsen to help lift a 3-foot pot containing 2,800 eggs, Olsen obliged but his back didn’t, according to a suit filed Monday.

Olsen, 31, of Huntington Beach alleges in the suit filed in Orange County Superior Court that he was in the jail’s kitchen on Dec. 8, 1992, when the cook asked him to help an inmate hoist the steel pot, which, he claims, weighed 600 pounds.

As the men lifted the pot, Olsen reportedly suffered tremendous pain in his lower back and dropped the pot to the floor, the lawsuit states.

Olsen’s suit states that the injury may result in a permanent disability and it asks for medical expenses, court costs and lost wages.

The suit does not make clear what Olsen was doing in the kitchen or whether he works there. Neither he nor his attorney could be reached for comment.

Olsen’s written claim for injuries, disability, losses and damages was rejected by the county on July 12.
