THOUSAND OAKS : City OKs Plans for Plaza Grand Opening

Share

Eager to celebrate a $64-million building in style, the Thousand Oaks City Council on Tuesday approved plans for a glitzy grand opening weekend at the Civic Arts Plaza later this year.

The $317,500 budget calls for a variety of events for all ages and income levels, from a performance featuring local talent to a black-tie gathering after a splashy inaugural show.

The party--which also celebrates Thousand Oaks’ 30th birthday--will take place the weekend of Oct. 23.

The Civic Arts Plaza will technically open in September when the City Council and Planning Commission meet in the 400-seat theater. Tentative plans call for a local company to present “Man of La Mancha” in the theater in September as well.

But the gala affair will wait until the 1,800-seat auditorium opens in October with performances by a big-name pop singer, as yet unsigned, and the Conejo Symphony.

“We need this type of grand opening in order to build awareness throughout Southern California about what we have here in Thousand Oaks,” said Larry Sparrow, a member of the Civic Theaters Commission.

The city will put up the $317,500, but hopes to recoup most of that through ticket and souvenir sales.
