COLLEGE BASKETBALL : Kentucky Rolls; Center Is Injured

Rod Rhodes made his first seven shots of the second half as No. 4 Kentucky went on a 29-12 tear and coasted to a 107-82 victory over No. 22 Vanderbilt in a Southeastern Conference opener at Lexington, Ky., Tuesday night.

Kentucky (10-1), winning its eighth game in a row, went from a 52-42 halftime advantage to 81-54 with 11:09 to play. Vanderbilt (7-3) got no closer than 88-64 thereafter.

Kentucky center Rodney Dent suffered an injury to his left knee with 13:47 to play in the first half and will have tests today to determine its extent.

No. 11 Louisville 132, George Mason 87--Dwayne Morton had 31 points and DeJuan Wheat 20 at Louisville, Ky., as the Cardinals (9-1) set a scoring record and beat George Mason (5-6) at Coach Paul Westhead’s own fast-paced game. George Mason (5-6) made only 34 of 104 shots.

No. 8 Massachusetts 71, Rutgers 59--Lou Roe scored 20 points and Mike Williams added 16 at Piscataway, N.J., as Massachusetts (10-1, 2-0 in the Atlantic 10) won its seventh game in a row.

Maryland 91, No. 12 Georgia Tech 88--Joe Smith and Keith Booth made baskets and Johnny Rhodes sank two free throws to blunt a rally and boost Maryland (8-2, 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference) against Georgia Tech (9-2).

No. 16 Connecticut 77, Georgetown 65--Donyell Marshall scored 29 points and the Huskies (12-1, 2-0 in the Big East) beat Georgetown (7-4, 1-2) at Hartford.

No. 20 Boston College 96, Villanova 84--The Eagles (10-2, 2-0 in the Big East) made 12 of 17 three-pointers and shot 63% in beating Villanova (4-5, 1-2) at Newton, Mass.
