John Starks and Patrick Ewing saw the challenge of Shaquille O’Neal and the Orlando Magic, and they responded by taking on even more of a load than usual.

Starks matched his career high with 39 points and Ewing outdueled O’Neal down the stretch, leading the New York Knicks to a 100-95 victory over the Magic on Tuesday night in New York.

Ewing, 10 years older than the 21-year-old O’Neal, matched the NBA’s leading scorer with 26 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to O’Neal’s five.
