HERMOSA BEACH : County to Pay for Beach Services Through June 30
After months of threatening to pull lifeguards and some beach groomers out of Hermosa Beach in a funding dispute, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has agreed to continue the services through June 30.
The supervisors voted 5 to 0 to maintain the services after the Hermosa Beach City Council reluctantly offered to contribute $107,000 annually to help pay for them.
It now costs the county $1.3 million a year to provide lifeguards and beach cleaning crews for the city.
County officials said they hope the agreement will guide negotiations with other beach cities, including Redondo Beach, Avalon and Manhattan Beach, which have also balked at paying more for county services.
