NBA ROUNDUP : Majerle’s Three-Pointers Silence the Jazz, 107-91

Dan Majerle scored 25 points, including six three-pointers, and the Phoenix Suns outscored Utah by 24 points in the first quarter to defeat the Jazz, 107-91, Wednesday night at Salt Lake City, ending Utah’s 10-game home winning streak.

A 30-7 run in the last 7:22 of the first quarter, led by A.C. Green’s nine points, gave the Suns a 40-16 lead and virtually assured that they would not lose consecutive games for the first time this season.

The Jazz pulled to 60-49 at halftime, but got no closer in the second half. Danny Ainge scored nine points in the third quarter as the Suns extended their advantage to 86-67.

Orlando 105, Chicago 90--Shaquille O’Neal and Anfernee Hardaway took turns wearing out the Bulls at Orlando.

Hardaway helped Orlando build a 15-point halftime lead and O’Neal scored 16 of his 28 points after halftime.

The loss was only the third in 18 games for the Bulls, who shot 28% in the second quarter and never recovered. Hardaway scored 12 points in the quarter, including 10 in a row during the Magic’s 12-2 run to take a 55-40 halftime lead. O’Neal made 10 of 17 shots and finished with 12 rebounds.

Houston 114, Dallas 102--Hakeem Olajuwon scored 15 of his 37 points during a 28-14 second-quarter surge to lead the Rockets at Dallas, extending the Mavericks’ NBA-record single-season home winless streak to 14 games.

Olajuwon made seven of nine shots in the second period to help the Rockets expand a two-point lead after one quarter to 55-39 at halftime.

Rookie Jamal Mashburn scored a career-high 37 points to lead Dallas, whose 2-27 record is the worst in the NBA.

Minnesota 109, Denver 95--Micheal Williams and Luc Longley sparked a 15-2 third-quarter run after Isaiah Rider was ejected at Minneapolis, ending the Timberwolves’ seven-game losing streak.

Williams finished with 22 points and nine assists and Longley had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who also broke a five-game home losing streak.

Christian Laettner, who didn’t start because he missed a practice, came off the bench for the first time in his NBA career and had 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Boston 101, Cleveland 96--Robert Parish scored eight of his 16 points in the final five minutes and Dee Brown scored 25 to lead the Celtics at Richfield, Ohio.

Boston won for the second time in its last 10 games while sending Cleveland to its third consecutive loss. The Celtics have won four in a row against the Cavaliers.

Cleveland led by 10 at halftime, but Kevin Gamble and Brown each scored 10 points during Boston’s 28-18 third quarter, tying it at 71-71.

Washington 97, Indiana 95--Tom Gugliotta’s layup with 1.2 seconds to play broke a tie and lifted the Bullets at Landover, Md., ending their seven-game home losing streak.

Kevin Duckworth had seven points during an 18-2 fourth-quarter run that put the Bullets in position to win. Duckworth also made two foul shots to tie the score before Gugliotta made his twisting layup.

Dale Davis had a career-high 28 points, plus 12 rebounds for the Pacers, who have lost five in a row on the road.

Milwaukee 100, New Jersey 91--Rookie Vin Baker had season highs of 29 points and 12 rebounds, leading the Bucks at East Rutherford, N.J.

The Bucks never lost the lead after making 15 of 23 shots in the first period for a 12-point lead.
