SPORTSCOPE : Northridge Women Fall to Loyola

Sheri Brown scored a game-high 22 points and Tanya White added 17 to spark the Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team to a 79-52 victory over Cal State Northridge on Thursday night at Gersten Pavilion.

The Lions overcame 27 turnovers to improve to 4-8. The Matadors (1-11) have lost eight consecutive games.

Michelle Esparza led Northridge with 21 points.

The Los Angeles City Council will honor the national champion Pop Warner junior peewee American Division Wilmington-Carson Pilots today at 10 a.m. in a ceremony that will be televised on Channel 13 at 7:30 tonight. The 27-member team, ages 9-11, represented California in a 12-0 victory over Massachusetts last month. The team’s coach is Steve Vigil.

Florida Marlin pitcher Charlie Hough and former Angel manager Gene Mauch are scheduled to be among the sports celebrities participating in the American Red Cross South Bay District’s golf classic at 11 a.m. on Jan. 24 at Cypress Golf Club in Los Alamitos.

The cost is $200 a player, including refreshments, lunch and dinner.

Former major league pitcher Ken Brett, a broadcaster for the Angels, is honorary chairman. Proceeds will go toward Red Cross programs and services in the South Bay.
