SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Thirty-two nonprofit groups have applied for portions of a $75,000 grant offered by the city to help community service efforts.

“We were very impressed with the high caliber of grant applications we received and how much is actually being done in the community,” said Rick Putnam, city director of parks, recreation and community services.

Santa Clarita established the annual program in 1990, shelving it during 1992, when funds went for recreation activities at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center.

There has been high interest in the Community Services Grant Program’s return. Putnam and Santa Clarita City Council members Jo Anne Darcy and Jan Heidt reviewed the 32 applications and have recommended funding 21 of the requests, at a cost of $50,750.

The entire council is scheduled to consider the requests Tuesday.

Suggested allocations include $5,000 to the Assn. to Aid Victims of Domestic Violence for a family violence protection project, $5,000 to the Boys & Girls Club for after-school programs at Emblem and Sierra Vista schools, $3,000 to the Samuel Dixon Family Health Center for expanded hours, $2,500 to the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry for two computers, and $2,000 to the Cedarcreek Elementary School PTA for landscaping improvements.

The remaining $24,250 will either carry over into the 1994-95 budget year for the program or be used to cover late expenses that meet the spirit of the program.

“Things have a way of coming up after the grant (program),” said Gail Foy, public information officer.
