Los Angeles police arrested two young men on suspicion of murder late Friday after a sports car they had allegedly stolen smashed into a van, killing a passenger.

Michael Menchaca and Juan Hernandez, both 18, were being held in the death of a 26-year-old Orange County man, whose name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, police said.

About 7:30 p.m. Friday, two men approached Brian Kim as he parked his Mitsubishi 3000 GT on Marathon Street and took it at gunpoint, Lt. John Fletcher said.

Kim called police, and officers spotted the car nearly three hours later and began tailing it.

As the car traveled east on Carroll Street, it slammed into a Dodge van on Douglas Street.

One passenger was thrown from the vehicle and struck his head on a retaining wall. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Fletcher said. Two other passengers were hospitalized at USC Medical Center, listed in critical but stable condition.
