Here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen on what to do in the garden this week:

* For a new year, plan on a new garden. Replace overgrown shrubs and plant new ones in their place. The same applies to trees. Add color to the flower beds and be sure to plant some flowering shrubs.

* Be sure to bait for snails and slugs when you plant winter bedding plants.

* January is the time to plant summer blooming bulbs-- watsonia, cannas and more.
