COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Alabama Knocks Off No. 1 Arkansas, 66-64

Alabama pulled off the biggest upset of the college basketball season Saturday, beating No. 1 Arkansas, 66-64, at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The Razorbacks failed to make a field goal in the final three minutes. Arkansas (10-1 overall and 1-1 in the Southeastern Conference) was held 40 points below its season average of 104 points.

Alabama (4-5, 1-1) was led by Artie Griffin’s 14 points.

No. 2 North Carolina 75, Maryland 70--North Carolina held the Terrapins to one field goal during an eight-minute stretch of the second half at College Park, Md.

Eric Montross and Dante Calabria each scored 14 points for the Tar Heels (12-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference).

No. 3 Duke 88, No. 12 Georgia Tech 71--Antonio Lang scored a career-high 23 points and Duke erased a 13-point deficit in the first half at Durham, N.C. Lang was one of five players in double figures for Duke (9-0, 2-0 ACC).

James Forrest led Georgia Tech (9-3, 0-2) with 20 points.

Georgia 94, No. 4 Kentucky 90--Reserve Steve Jones scored Georgia’s final four points and had a key steal and dunk in the last five seconds of overtime to lead the Bulldogs at Athens, Ga.

Charles Claxton led Georgia (7-4, 2-0 SEC) with 21 points. Kentucky (9-2, 1-1) was led by Tony Delk with 27 points.

No. 5 Kansas 91, Southern Methodist 59--Richard Scott scored 22 points and led a 21-0 first-half run as Kansas (15-1) rolled at Lawrence, Kan.

No. 7 Temple 80, No. 23 George Washington 64--Aaron McKie scored 23 points and Temple (6-2, 1-1 Atlantic 10) made 13 of its first 17 second-half shots at Philadelphia.

No. 8 Massachusetts 70, Duquesne 53--Massachusetts (11-1, 3-0 Atlantic 10) turned to defense with star Lou Roe in foul trouble, forcing 26 turnovers at Pittsburgh.

Va. Commonwealth 93, No. 11 Louisville 89--Kendrick Warren made the go-ahead basket in overtime and followed with a dunk off a steal as Virginia Commonwealth (8-3, 1-0 Metro) beat the Cardinals (10-2, 1-1) at Louisville, Ky.

No. 13 Michigan 71, Iowa 70--Michigan came from behind twice and won on Jimmy King’s three-pointer with 7.3 seconds left at Iowa City. Iowa was up, 68-59, with less than four minutes left before Michigan (10-2, 2-0) rallied.

No. 14 Indiana 80, Penn St. 72--Damon Bailey scored 25 points and Pat Graham added a career-high 24 as the Hoosiers (8-2, 2-1 Big Ten) benefited from a flurry of second-half foul shots at Bloomington, Ind.

No. 15 Wisconsin 69, Ohio State 55--Michael Finley led a with 19 second-half points as the Badgers (11-0, 2-0 Big Ten) erased their first halftime deficit of the season at Madison, Wis.

No. 16 Connecticut 77, No. 20 Boston College 71--Donyell Marshall scored 24 points and matched his career high with 16 rebounds to lead Connecticut (12-1, 3-0 Big East) over Boston College (10-3, 2-1) at Storrs, Conn.

No. 18 Syracuse 79, Pittsburgh 75--John Wallace made two free throws with 1:22 to play, then blocked a shot to set up a three-point play to lift the Orangemen (9-1, 2-1 Big East) at Syracuse.

No. 19 Minnesota 73, Northwestern 65--Voshon Lenard scored 23 points and Townsend Orr added 18 for Minnesota (10-3, 1-0 Big Ten) at Evanston, Ill.

Michigan St. 79, No. 21 Illinois 74--Shawn Respert made five of six free throws after an intentional foul and two technicals called against Illinois Coach Lou Henson at East Lansing, Mich.

No. 22 Vanderbilt 97, South Carolina 83--Frank Seckar scored a career-high 23 points, including seven three-pointers, as Vanderbilt beat its former coach, Eddie Fogler, at Nashville, Tenn. The Commodores (8-3, 1-1 in SEC) took control behind a school-record 16 three-pointers.

Robert Churchwell scored 24 points to lead Georgetown (7-3) to a 78-67 victory over Nevada Las Vegas (5-4) at Landover, Md. . . . Center Sharone Wright scored 24 points to lead Clemson (7-4) to an 67-63 victory over North Carolina Charlotte (7-3) at Clemson, S.C. . . . Kareem Townes scored 38 points to lead La Salle (7-5) to an 84-81 overtime victory over Notre Dame (4-7) at Philadelphia.
