NATIVE PRESENCE: That controversy over construction at a possible Chumash graveyard in Camarillo points up the presence of thousands of Native Americans in Ventura County. . . . In addition to Chumash descendants, the county is home to members of 91 other tribes, according to the Ventura County Indian Education Consortium, which helps educate 780 Native American students in seven districts. . . . Largest local tribes: Chumash, Cherokee, Chippewa, Apache and Sioux.

PANEL OVERLOAD: Supervisor Maria E. VanderKolk wants a seat on the county budget committee (B1), but Supervisor John K. Flynn doesn’t. He has more than enough meetings, thank you. . . . “People think that after the Tuesday board meeting, we go home for the week,” said Flynn, who serves on the assessment appeals board, two airport boards, three water panels, a beach erosion committee, the Ventura County Organization of Governments and the Southern California Assn. of Governments. “Believe me, that’s not true.”

DISASTER AID: When killer floods inundated Ventura County, they established radio contact with stricken areas. And when fires blackened the county last fall, they worked around the clock to help firefighters communicate. . . . On Tuesday, the 100-plus members of the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services will be honored by the Board of Supervisors. . . . The ham operators don’t get in the way of police and firefighters, Undersheriff Richard Bryce said. “Usually, they get there first.”

AIRPORT COMING? It’s been 26 years since a new commercial airport opened in California--Sacramento Metropolitan. Now some Ventura County leaders want to bring commercial flights to the Navy’s Point Mugu air strip (B1). . . . Several other communities--including San Bernardino and San Diego--are also looking at turning military bases into airports. . . . But the Ventura County proposal is furthest along, said Duane Ferguson of the state Division of Aviation. Problem: So far, the airlines aren’t interested.
