L.A. to Fund Veterans’ Shelter
Joining public and private agencies to help homeless veterans, the Los Angeles City Council has agreed to earmark $50,000 for a temporary shelter at the Veteran’s Medical Center in West Los Angeles that serves the South Bay area.
The grant would advance plans by the Veterans Administration and Salvation Army to convert part of the medical center to a transitional housing facility for homeless veterans. The 21,000-square-foot shelter would contain 17 dormitory sleeping rooms, two multipurpose rooms, a dining area and counseling offices.
Under the program, veterans could stay in the facility for up to a year to receive vocational training, job counseling, medical treatment and other assistance toward obtaining stable work and permanent housing.
The program’s other sponsors include Los Angeles Unified School District, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the San Fernando Valley Apartment Assn.
