ROUNDUP : Fourth-Quarter Rally Brings Bell-Jeff a Point Short

Bell-Jeff is still looking for its first Camino Real League basketball victory basketball after a near-miss Wednesday in a 60-59 loss to visiting La Salle.

Bell-Jeff forward Danny Mancinelli had 28 points and rallied the Guards from a seven-point deficit with 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Mancinelli stole an inbounds pass and dunked at the other end with less than a minute left to make it 60-59. But the Guards (5-10, 0-2 in league play) who got the ball back with 20 seconds left, turned the ball over then committed a flagrant foul.

La Salle missed both free throws but retained possession because of the flagrant foul and ran out the clock.

In other boys’ basketball games:

Chatsworth 83, Granada Hills 52--After the teams battled to a 20-20 tie in the first quarter, Chatsworth closed out the half with a 23-7 run. Eddie Miller led the Chancellors with 29 points. Tariq Hill added 14. Steve Fisher led Granada Hills with 16.

Taft 79, San Fernando 59--Despite spotting San Fernando several inches along the frontline, Taft finished with a 45-29 rebounding edge in the Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando (7-9, 1-1).

Montoya Washington led Taft (10-6, 1-1) with a game-high 24 points and teammates Ricky Steele and Lamont Magee added 18 and 17. Taft outscored San Fernando, 29-19, in the fourth quarter.

North Hollywood 89, Poly 50--The Huskies (8-5, 3-0 in the Valley Pac-8 Conference) dominated from the outset. North Hollywood breezed after a 21-5 first quarter, with Damon Ollie scoring 29 points and grabbing 20 rebounds. Arthur Lee finished with 21 points and Fantasia Johnson had 18 points and 10 assists.

Birmingham 57, Canoga Park 54-- Junior guards Scott James and Marc Fernando combined for 36 points to lead the host Braves in the Valley Pac-8 Conference game. James scored 22 points and Fernando added 14 for Birmingham (5-6, 2-2). Jody Edington led Canoga Park with 16 points.

Monroe 91, Sherman Oaks CES 76--Dante Holly had 19 points and seven rebounds, and Shaka Stiner and Dante Cain each added 16 points for host Monroe in the Mid-Valley League game.

Cleveland 67, El Camino Real 50--Timmy Harris and Rudolph Henry each scored 17 points to lead the visiting Cavaliers in the Northwest Valley Conference game. Cleveland jumped out to a 16-point lead in the first quarter.

Eagle Rock 78, Verdugo Hills 59--A hot-shooting Eagle Rock team upset Verdugo Hills in a Northern Conference game. Chan Cornish carried the Dons with 25 points and 21 rebounds, but Verdugo Hills fell to 4-7, 2-3.

Agoura 61, Simi Valley 46--The Pioneers couldn’t survive a 19-7 deficit after the first quarter and the Chargers improved to 9-5, 3-1 in Marmonte League play. Ben Richardson had 17 points for Agoura. Nathan Simmons (18) and Vernon Simmons combined for 31 of Simi Valley’s points.

Ventura 63, Oxnard 47--Brian Rich had 11 points and a season-high 17 rebounds--three shy of the school record--and John-Ryan Kern (14 points) and Paul Lozano (11 points, five assists) also scored in double figures for Ventura (6-7, 2-2) in a Channel League game at Oxnard.

Westlake 101, Channel Islands 79--Reserves Steve Aylsworth and Matt Smiley each had 20 points as the host Warriors (10-2, 4-0 in the Marmonte League) surpassed the 100-point mark for the first time this season.

Harvard-Westlake 60, Notre Dame 53 (OT)--Jason and Jarron Collins combined for seven of host Harvard-Westlake’s 10 points in overtime of the Mission League game. Jarron Collins finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Jason Collins added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Wolverines (14-1, 4-1). Rich Igou, who missed the front end of a one-and-one with four seconds left in regulation, led Notre Dame (2-3 in league play) with 22 points.

Montclair Prep 74, Ribet Academy 48--Reed Berglund sank 10 of 14 field-goal attempts and scored a season-high 26 points, and Anwan Jones added a season-high 20 and also had 11 rebounds for visiting Montclair Prep (11-4) in a nonleague game. Wilson Williams led Ribet (7-4) with 16 points.

Loyola 95, Chaminade 68--John Gunn (17 points), Casey Cote (15) and Carmine Rossi (15) led host Chaminade (4-10, 0-5) in the Mission League game. Ryan Bailey paced Loyola (5-0 in league play) with 24 points.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley 104, Mt. San Jacinto 97-- Danny Prince scored 27 points, all on three-point shots, as the visiting Marauders came back from a 10-point deficit in the second half in a Foothill Conference game.

Orville Turner led Antelope Valley (10-9, 3-2) with 28 points. Mt. San Jacinto (9-9, 3-1) was led by Lamont Jones with a game-high 31 points.

BOYS’ SOCCER

El Camino Real 2, Cleveland 1--Gilberto Velasquez and Nick Gaskins scored goals in the second half for the host Conquistadores in the Northwest Valley League match.

North Hollywood 4, Van Nuys 3--Joel Juarez broke a 1-1 tie in the first half and Juver Urbina scored the game-winner in the second half. The Huskies improved to 4-2-1, 2-1-1 in Valley Pac-8 play.

Sylmar 2, Canoga Park 2--Jose Lopez scored with five minutes remaining to give visiting Canoga Park a tie in a Valley Pac-8 League match. Israel and Gubini Cabrera each had goals for Sylmar (4-2-1, 2-1-1) and Jorge Rojas had the other Hunter goal.

Granada Hills 1, San Fernando 1-- Brett Siciliano scored for the host Highlanders (5-3-3, 1-1-2) to tie the game in the 23rd minute of the second half in a Northwest Valley League match. Felipe Aguilar had scored six minutes earlier for San Fernando (3-3-1, 3-0-1).

Chaminade 3, Loyola 1--Mike Costanza scored two goals and Charles Cummings added a goal and an assist for Chaminade (3-1-1 in league play) in a Mission League match.

Alemany 1, Crespi 0--Kendall Simmonds scored for the visiting Indians (7-6-1, 2-3) midway through the first half of the Mission League match.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

La Reina 2, Bishop Diego 0--Alicia Bueschen scored both goals in the second half and Jenny LaFenina recorded her seventh shutout. The Regents, ranked No. 2 in Division IV, have won five in a row.

Harvard-Westlake 3, Notre Dame 1--Stacy Schwartz had a goal and an assist, and Lizzy Fisher and Sara Yateman each added goals for Harvard-Westlake (7-4-1, 2-2) in a Mission League match at Notre Dame.

Amy Thomsen had the Knights’ goal and goalie Michele Lucente added 13 saves for Notre Dame (4-6-2, 0-3-1).

Alemany 2, Louisville 1--Indian midfielder Jamie Malkin scored two goals in a Mission League match at Alemany (11-3-2, 4-1). Andrea Licari scored for Louisville (8-4, 2-3).
