HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Village Christian’s Starters Finish Off Western Christian, 91-21

Village Christian’s starters shot 60% from the field as the visiting Crusaders crushed Western Christian, 91-21, in an Alpha League girls’ basketball game Thursday night.

All five starters scored in double figures for Village Christian (15-1, 2-0 in league play), led by Lindy James with 22 points. Jeanne Beauchamp added 17 points and nine assists for Village Christian.

The Crusaders held a 72-11 lead after holding Western Christian scoreless in the third quarter.

Freshman guard Mary Parker came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds for the Crusaders.

In other girls’ basketball games:

Thousand Oaks 49, Camarillo 42--Sara Samimi scored nine of her team-high 16 points in the first quarter and Nicki LaSalla scored 12 of her 14 points in the second quarter to lead the visiting Lancers (13-4, 5-1) in the Marmonte League game.

Channel Islands 55, Newbury Park 44--Despite scoring only six points in the fourth quarter, Channel Islands (14-2, 5-0) was able to hold off the Panthers in the Marmonte league game. The Raiders were led by Dolores Tuimoloau (18 points) and Shawanda Hotchkiss (17).

Alemany 71, Louisville 39--Carly Funicello scored 19 points and blocked six shots to lead the Indians (15-0, 5-0) to the Mission League victory at home. Zevette Mitchell scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Samantha Rigley added 17 points for Alemany.

Buena 71, Dos Pueblos 37--Mikko Giordano scored 25 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked five shots to lead the visiting Bulldogs (10-1, 4-0) in the Channel League game. Buena shot 46% from the field.

Notre Dame 62, Harvard-Westlake 41--Valery Brady scored 17 points and junior Maggie Dixon scored 14 with 12 rebounds and six assists for the host Knights (10-5, 3-1) in the Mission League game. Sophomore Lourdes Slinsky had career highs with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Royal 57, Agoura 48--Royal (10-3, 3-2) hit nine of 10 free throws in the decisive fourth quarter of the Marmonte League game. Agoura’s Kathy Kelly led all scorers with 18 points and Tawnee Cooper had 14 points for Royal.

Simi Valley 62, Westlake 38--Sara Griffin scored 22 points and was nine for 11 from the field, leading the Pioneers (10-8, 2-3) to a road Marmonte League victory. Kim Butler scored 13 points and Kristen Hansen scored six and grabbed 10 rebound for Simi Valley. Shannon Sincock led Westlake (6-9, 1-3) with 15 points.

Fillmore 58, Oak Park 44--Maria Rangel (17 points) and Julie Arundell (15 points) led host Fillmore in the Tri-Valley League game.

The first and second quarters turned out to be decisive, as both teams put out identical scores in the second half.

St. Mary’s 69, Bell-Jeff 65--Each team had four players in double figures, and Bell-Jeff’s Christina Ticsay led all scorers with 23 points.

Ticsay hit three three-pointers in the final minute and a half to bring the game to a tie, but St. Mary’s (9-2, 4-0) then rallied to win. Keisha Wade led the host Belles with 22 points. Cathy Flores scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Guards (11-4, 3-1).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Grace Brethren 82, Highland Hall 47--Jules Holbrook scored 14 points and Johnny Schwartz had six blocked shots as the Hawks fell in a nonleague game at Grace Brethren.

Buckley 45, Holy Martyrs 37--T.J. Jackson and Rodney Mogen each scored 14 points and Eric Biddle had 10 steals to lead host Buckley (6-6, 3-2) in the Liberty League game.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Hart 2, Oak Park 0--Oscar Franco and Victor Pilar scored in the second half for the Indians (6-2-5) in the nonleague match.

Thousand Oaks 1, Camarillo 0--Lance Lane scored 10 minutes into the second half for the visiting Lancers in a Marmonte League match.

Johan Alarcon had 12 saves for Thousand Oaks (7-4, 4-2).

WRESTLING

Moorpark 39, Fillmore 34--The Raiders won their first match of the season, taking the lead when heavyweight Jason King pinned Fillmore’s John Zavala in the third period.

Moorpark trailed, 34-33, before the heavyweight match.

Simi Valley 54, Westlake 10--Simi Valley’s Jesse Holt improved to 17-0 with a takedown in overtime for a 9-7 victory against Josh Legere in the 152-pound weight class, leading the Pioneers (5-1, 2-1) to a Marmonte League victory.
