After trailing most of the game Friday, the Ocean View boys’ basketball team upset visiting Huntington Beach, 51-47, ending the Oilers’ Sunset League winning streak at 22.

Mike Carney’s layup gave Ocean View (9-8, 4-1 in league) its first lead, 44-42, with just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter.

“It was a crazy game,” Ocean View Coach Jim Harris said. “(Huntington Beach) has had a great stretch. I remember when we had a streak of 27 wins, and it is really something special.”

With 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Matt Malmquist brought the Oilers to within 48-47, but Carney converted one free throw and Tim Walsh hit two to give the Seahawks the four-point lead.

“We are a very good free-throw-shooting team,” Harris said. “(Huntington Beach) did everything right. They fouled people at the right time and just played real well. We were just able to get some transition buckets.”

The Oilers (10-7, 4-1 in league) took an 18-8 lead, but Ocean View closed to within one at halftime, 25-24, on a last-second, 10-foot shot by Kevin Johnson.

Huntington Beach opened the third quarter with an 11-2 run, but Carney followed by scoring eight of Ocean View’s next 12 points to cut the lead. Carney finished with a game-high 20 points.

“Mike Carney has shown a lot of heart,” Harris said. “He carried us in the first half and then got some big buckets late in the game.”

Huntington Beach’s Tony Gonzalez, who is averaging 24.7 points, finished with 19 points after scoring 10 in the first quarter. He also had 10 rebounds.
