A 32-year-old mother drowned Saturday in Jackson Lake while trying to rescue her son who had fallen through the ice, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said.

The 10-year-old boy, whose name was not released, was playing on the edge of the ice-covered lake with his mother about 1 p.m. when he fell through the ice, said Sgt. Gil Arce of the Antelope Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“The mother went to help along with two other family members, and they also fell through,” Arce said.

Bystanders were able to use a makeshift rope to rescue everyone but the mother, whose body was retrieved by a sheriff’s dive team, Arce said. The boy was taken to San Bernardino Hospital, where he was being treated for mild hypothermia, Arce said.
