COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Kansas Is Latest No. 1 Team to Fall, 68-64

Anthony Beane made a one-handed shot from the lane with 12 seconds to play Monday night at Lawrence, Kan., lifting Kansas State past No. 1 Kansas, 68-64, barely 12 hours after the Jayhawks ascended to the top ranking.

Beane broke a 64-64 tie with the basket, penetrating the defense and pulling up for the shot. He then made two free throws with 1.9 seconds to play to send Kansas State past its rival and end a 12-game winning streak for the Jayhawks, who are 16-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big Eight Conference.

Beane finished with 18 points and Askia Jones scored 26 for Kansas State (12-3, 1-2). Sean Pearson led Kansas with 15 points.

After Beane’s foul shots, Kansas inbounded and called time out at midcourt. The Jayhawks then failed to get off a final shot.

Kansas, outrebounding opponents by more than seven a game, was outrebounded, 44-32.

Kansas trailed, 55-42, with 11 minutes to play after Brian Gavin made a three-point shot. The Jayhawks rallied to tie the score on two free throws by Steve Woodberry. But Jones then made a three-point shot for a 60-57 lead with 4:46 left.

Kansas State led, 64-59, with 1:41 left following a Kansas turnover and two free throws by Beane, but Woodberry’s basket with with 1:26 pulled Kansas to within 64-61.

The Wildcats, who had lost their first two Big Eight games, went on a 13-0 run at the end of the first half and into the second.

Jones made consecutive three-point shots to give Kansas State a 44-32 lead with 17:29 to play before Richard Scott converted a three-point play to end the Wildcat streak.

No. 10 Connecticut 88, Hartford 62--Ray Allen scored a career-high 28 points to help Connecticut overcome a difficult first half at Hartford.

Donyell Marshall finished with 23 points and Brian Fair added 15 for the Huskies (15-1), who trailed Hartford (7-5) by five points before taking a 47-37 lead at halftime. Allen responded with 18 points in the second half.

OTHER GAMES

Othella Harrington had a season-high 21 points and Georgetown (10-3, 4-2) was able to hold off a rally despite not scoring a field goal in the final 5:58 in a 57-53 Big East Conference victory over Seton Hall (9-5, 2-4) at East Rutherford, N.J. . . . Bryan Passink scored 21 points--including four three-pointers--as Alabama (6-6) opened a big lead in the second half on its way to a 104-68 victory over Tennessee Martin (3-10) at Tuscaloosa, Ala.
