NBA ROUNDUP : Sick, Injured Suns Still Have Enough Against Mavericks

A.C. Green scored nine of his 19 points in a 5 1/2-minute span late in the game, including a three-point play with 1:38 to go that sealed the Phoenix Suns’ 113-103 victory over the Dallas Mavericks at Phoenix.

Green made it 110-98 with his layup and free throw, sending the Mavericks to their 10th consecutive defeat and 33rd in 35 games.

Dan Majerle scored 27 points and Oliver Miller had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Suns, who improved to 3-3 in games played without injured Charles Barkley.

To add to their woes, Phoenix point guard Kevin Johnson, who had missed six of the last seven games because of a sprained right ankle and leg bruise, has come down with the chicken pox, according to the team doctor.

Johnson won’t be able to practice until after he’s examined Friday. However, he was expected to miss the rest of the week because of his leg injury.

Milwaukee 123, Detroit 91--Reserve Jon Barry scored a career-high 21 points as the Bucks ended a six-game losing streak at Milwaukee.

Detroit lost for a team-record 14th consecutive time.

Reserve guard Todd Day had 17 points, 13 in the fourth quarter, when the Bucks broke out of a month-long shooting slump.

The Pistons tied the club’s single-season record losing streak of 14 games, set in 1980. Detroit’s longest losing skid is 21 games--the last 14 games of the 1979-80 season and the first seven of 1980-81.

Portland 104, Denver 103--Clifford Robinson’s season-high 32 points and Rod Strickland’s two free throws with 29 seconds to play in overtime lifted the Trail Blazers at Denver.

The victory was the fourth in a row for the Trail Blazers. Denver suffered its fourth loss in a row.

Boston 95, Houston 83--Robert Parish, held scoreless by the Rockets last week, had 19 points and 17 rebounds at Houston.

The victory gave the Celtics their first two-game winning streak since Dec. 1-3, when they defeated Washington and Portland. The defeat left the Rockets with their first three-game losing streak of the season.

Hakeem Olajuwon outscored Parish, 37-0, in Houston’s 94-84 victory at Boston last week.
