An Oxnard man found a pipe bomb near his car moments after his business’ pickup truck had burned, police said Saturday.
Police notified Rodolfo Perez just after 3 a.m. Saturday that the pickup truck at Perez’s tire business had caught fire. As he walked to his car to drive to his business, he noticed a red flame spurting from what appeared to be a pipe bomb, police said.
Perez, who lives on the 1900 block of Lennox Court, put out the flame with a garden hose, then drove to Rudy’s Tire Shop at 800 E. 5th St., police said.
When Perez told police about the water-drenched pipe bomb, they called in the county Sheriff’s Department bomb squad, which took the device to the department’s special “bomb bunker” near Camarillo Airport, deputies said. The bomb turned out to be live and was deactivated, deputies said.
Oxnard police said they are still investigating the two incidents.
