Kansas’ second game at No. 1 worked out much better than its first.

Upset by Kansas State only hours after moving atop the Associated Press poll last Monday, Kansas defeated Iowa State, 78-71, Saturday in a Big Eight Conference game at Ames, Iowa.

Steve Woodberry made a three-pointer with 4:42 to play to give the Jayhawks a 63-56 lead. Jacque Vaughn drove for a layup less than a minute later and Greg Ostertag made two layups as Kansas built its lead to 69-58 with 2:15 remaining. Ostertag led the Jayhawks with 16 points.

Kansas improved to 17-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big Eight. Iowa State is 9-5 and 0-4.

No. 3 Arkansas 79, South Carolina 53--Davor Rimac made two three-pointers during a 16-1 run in the first half and the Razorbacks pulled away in a Southeastern Conference game at Fayetteville, Ark.

Corliss Williamson scored a career-high 27 points for Arkansas (13-2, 4-2). The Gamecocks are 5-8 and 2-3.

No. 4 North Carolina 88, Louisiana State 65--Freshman Jerry Stackhouse came off the bench to score 23 points to lead the Tar Heels (14-3) at New Orleans.

LSU (8-6) held Eric Montross to eight points and eight rebounds.

No. 5 Duke 106, Florida State 79--Antonio Lang and Chris Collins each had career highs as the Blue Devils won an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Durham, N.C.

Lang scored 26 points and Collins added 21 as Duke (13-1, 5-1) moved into first place in the ACC.

Bob Sura led Florida State (8-6, 1-5) with a career-high 35 points.

No. 6 Massachusetts 56, George Washington 55--Marcus Camby’s dunk with three seconds to play lifted the Minutemen in an Atlantic 10 game at Amherst, Mass.

Mike Williams led Massachusetts (15-2, 7-0) with 13 points. Nimbo Hammons scored 22 points for George Washington (8-7, 2-5).

No. 7 Kentucky 86, Mississippi State 70--Travis Ford scored all 17 of his points in the second half as the Wildcats (14-3, 4-2) won an SEC game at Starkville, Miss.

Mississippi State (11-3, 5-1) had 30 turnovers.

No. 8 Indiana 81, Northwestern 76--Damon Bailey scored seven consecutive points in the closing minutes and Alan Henderson had a season-high 26 to lead the Irish in a Big Ten game at Bloomington, Ind.

Indiana (11-3, 4-1) improved the nation’s longest home-court winning streak to 38 games. Northwestern is 9-5 and 0-5.

No. 12 Purdue 101, Ohio State 63--Cuonzo Martin scored a season-high 25 points and Glenn Robinson had 24 as the Boilermakers (16-1, 4-1) won a Big Ten game at West Lafayette, Ind.

Greg Simpson led Ohio State (9-8, 2-4) with 20 points.

No. 13 Louisville 70, Southern Mississippi 69--DeJuan Wheat made a 16-foot jumper with 6.5 seconds to play, and Jason Osborne then forced a Southern Mississippi turnover as the Cardinals (14-2, 4-1) held on in a Metro Conference game at Louisville, Ky.

Southern Mississippi is 7-7 and 1-2.

No. 16 Syracuse 78, Seton Hall 74--Otis Hill tipped in a three-point attempt by Adrian Autry with 1:05 to play for a 75-74 lead and the Orangemen held on in a Big East game at East Rutherford, N.J.

Syracuse (12-2, 5-2) was led by Lawrence Moten’s 22 points. Seton Hall is 9-6 and 2-5.

No. 18 Alabama Birmingham 71, Rhode Island 63--Clarence Thrash and George Wilkerson scored 17 points apiece, and Alabama Birmingham (14-2) pulled away in the second half at Birmingham.

Andre Fox led Rhode Island (5-8) with 22 points.

No. 20 Minnesota 68, Michigan State 66--Arriel McDonald’s 12-foot jumper with 1.9 seconds to play capped a 16-point performance and lifted the Golden Gophers (13-4, 4-1) in a Big Ten game at Minneapolis. McDonald also had a career-high 10 rebounds.

The Spartans are 12-6 and 3-3.

Marquette 62, No. 23 St. Louis 52--Jim McIlvaine, Marquette’s 7-foot-1 center, stifled smaller St. Louis and the Warriors handed the Billikens their first loss in a Great Midwestern game at Milwaukee.

McIlvaine had 13 points, seven blocks and 10 rebounds for the Warriors (11-4, 4-0).

St. Louis is 14-1 and 2-1.

No. 24 West Virginia 97, St. Joseph’s 83--Pervires Greene scored a career-high 28 points and Marsalis Basey scored 21 of his 26 points in the second half as the Mountaineers won an Atlantic 10 game at Philadelphia.

Ricky Robinson had 21 for the Mountaineers (12-2, 5-1), and Carlin Warley had a career-high 28 for St. Joseph’s (7-7, 1-5).

No. 25 Maryland 102, North Carolina State 70--Joe Smith scored 24 points in an ACC game to lead Maryland at College Park, Md., in the Terrapins’ first game in eight years as a nationally ranked team.

Maryland (11-3, 4-1) beat the Wolfpack (5-10, 1-4) for the fifth consecutive time.

Evansville 91, No. 22 Xavier, Ohio 61--Evansville scored 24 consecutive points during a 7 1/2-minute stretch of the second half in a Midwestern Collegiate Conference game at Evansville, Ind. Xavier fell to 12-2 and 1-1. The Purple Aces are 11-6 and 1-1.

OTHER GAMES

Jevon Crudup helped lead Missouri back from a 15-point second half deficit as the Tigers (13-2, 4-0) remained unbeaten in the Big Eight with a 73-68 victory over Oklahoma State (13-5, 2-1) at Stillwater, Okla. . . . Guard Greg Brown scored 13 points over the final 12 minutes to help turn New Mexico’s 14-point deficit into a 77-71 victory over Wyoming (9-7, 2-5) in a Western Athletic Conference game at Laramie, Wyo. New Mexico is 14-4 and 6-2. . . . Carl Ray Harris scored 18 points to lead Fresno State (9-7, 4-3) to a 76-64 WAC victory over Air Force (5-9, 0-7) at Air Force Academy, Colo.
