Emergency hazardous waste centers are opening in Simi Valley and Fillmore to collect leaky cans of paint thinner, broken bottles of pesticide and other toxic substances that were damaged in the Jan. 17 quake.

The collection centers, approved Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors and coordinated by the county’s General Services Agency and Waste Management Department, will be open today through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The waste collection centers will accept motor oil, paint solvents, auto batteries, household cleaners, pesticides, fertilizers, antifreeze and other toxic refuse.
