CERRITOS : Riding Bus to School Will Be Free in Fall

Share

Beginning in the fall, students will no longer have to pay a fee to be bused to schools in the ABC Unified School District.

The school board, which had received complaints from parents, voted 4 to 3 last week to eliminate the fee. The district charged $200 to $600 for passes for 310 students who ride buses to elementary, middle and high schools. The fees have generated $50,000 for the district this school year.

Fees were imposed last summer in an attempt to trim the district’s losses in the school-busing program, Assistant Supt. Patricia Koch said. Last year, the district spent $1.2 million on bus service but received about $900,000 from the state.

Board members Dixie Primosch, Robert Hughlett and Jim Weisenberger opposed the decision to drop the fees, saying the school district could not afford to lose more money on busing.

The ABC district operates schools in Cerritos, Artesia, Hawaiian Gardens and surrounding communities.
