Downey Voted Top Sportswriter
Times columnist Mike Downey has been voted California Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Assn. It is the fifth time in the last six years Downey has won the award.
Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully was voted California Sportscaster of the Year.
National winners were Chris Berman of ESPN and Peter Gammons of the Boston Globe. Elected to the NSSA Hall of Fame were sportscaster Pat Summerall and writers John Carmichael of Chicago and Edwin Pope of Miami.
