A summary of selected Los Angeles City Hall decisions in the past week affecting the Westside.
CITY COUNCIL
* BIKE LANES--Approved the use of $1.28 million in funding from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority for several new bike lanes. New lanes include the following: Venice Boulevard from Penmar Avenue to Naples Avenue; Pershing Drive from Imperial Highway to Manchester Avenue; Sepulveda Boulevard from 74th Street to Manchester Avenue. The funds also will be used for maintenance of existing bikes paths, such as those at Ballona Lagoon.
* NEW SIGNAL--Galanter proposed that a traffic study be conducted to determine if a signal light should be installed near the Westchester site of a new Los Angeles Police Department academy. The city is in the process of buying property at 5651 W. Manchester Blvd. for the new recruit training center, and Galanter said a study would help in deciding whether a signal should be installed at Manchester and Osage Avenue.
HOW THEY VOTED
* NARROW STREETS--Passed an ordinance to exempt the $6-a-month trash collection fee for single-family dwellings located on streets too narrow for a garbage truck. These homes were being billed even though their trash was not being picked up. Passed 14-0. Voting yes: John Ferraro, Marvin Braude, Ruth Galanter, Jackie Goldberg, Nate Holden, Mark Ridley-Thomas and Zev Yaroslavsky.
