Aid flooded in, millions and millions of dollars of it.

Suddenly, the scenes of tent cities and food lines we had watched on television, beamed into our living rooms from some faraway place, were happening next door.

The Red Cross and the Salvation Army set up shelters and the National Guard patrolled the streets for looters. But it seemed that crooks were shaken out of their routine along with everyone else. Even with rubble in them, the streets were safer than usual.
