No Offers Yet for Nordhoff’s Leach

On the first day of the winter signing period for high school football players, Nordhoff High’s Sean Leach remains a kicker without a college.

Leach, who was named Cal-Hi Sports’ top kicker in the state from medium-sized schools, has drawn interest from Notre Dame, Claremont-Mudd and those that fall in between on the broad spectrum of college football, but has yet to receive a formal offer.

For the record:

Player omitted--Chaminade High football player Adam Crecion has committed to play for the Naval Academy. Crecion, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound wide receiver, was inadvertently left off a list of expected area signees in Wednesday’s edition.

Leach, who made seven of 11 field goals and 33 of 37 extra points, also has been contacted by Oregon, Syracuse, UC Davis, Cal Lutheran and Kansas State. Washington has invited him as a walk-on, but Leach’s father, John, said some schools have hinted that scholarship offers might be made after today’s signings.

But the elder Leach also expressed surprise that his son hasn’t drawn more interest.

“USA Today made him its No. 2 punter and Sean made the Southern Section Super Team (covering all divisions), so we expected to hear a little more than we have,” he said. “But it’s still early.”

The 5-foot-11, 140-pound senior had a 44.7-yard punting average, including a long punt of 77 yards.

Interestingly, USC has shown no interest in Leach, whose uncle, Dick Leach, is the Trojan men’s tennis coach.

Calabasas tackle Jason Rempel (6-5, 260) could land at a Division I school in the coming weeks, if only as walk-on player. Rempel’s No. 1 choice is UCLA. The Bruins have offered Rempel a visit but no scholarship.
