FLIGHT FOR RIGHTS: Anaheim pilot Henry Le will lend a bit of spectacle to opening ceremonies Saturday for the weekend Tet celebration at Golden West College (OC Live!). He’ll lead a formation of four smoke-trailing planes. Another plane will fly a banner over the festival touting human rights for Vietnam. Le says it’s important to not forget “the condition of the people over there. We’ve got to look to the future of the country.”

BACK TO SCHOOL: County Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez will add to his busy schedule this spring. He’ll return to his alma mater, Chapman University in Orange, to teach an undergraduate political science class. Vasquez said his experiences in politics have given him a hefty amount of material for the course, called “Governing the Golden State.” . . . Says Vasquez: “I took political science classes there, and now I have a unique opportunity to return and teach. This is a full circle.”

HIGH HOPES: The movie version of “Hideaway,” Dean Koontz’s 1992 suspense thriller, goes into production later this month with Jeff Goldblum in the lead role (E1). The best-selling Newport Beach author hasn’t been too happy with the movie versions of five of his previous books. But with an actor of Goldblum’s stature aboard, Koontz says, he’s “allowing myself to be excited” about “Hideaway.” . . . “I think there’s a damn good chance this will be something I don’t have to apologize for,” he says.

IDENTITY CRISIS? Some folks who live on Alvarado Place in Newport Beach are getting tired of their mail--and their pizzas--heading instead to nearby Alvarado Street. So they’ve asked the city to change the name of one-block Alvarado Street to Viva Way. . . . Problem is, one resident prefers that it be Bonita Place. And one councilwoman suggests Plummer Way, after former Councilwoman Ruthelyn Plummer. Council members won’t decide until Feb. 14: They want to know what the people on Alvarado Street have to say.
