NEWPORT BEACH : Panel Rejects Plans for Beach Dog Park

The Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission decided that North Star Beach near the Dover Shores community is no place for a dog park.

About 50 people attended the commission hearing Tuesday night to discuss the proposed four-acre park, where dog owners would have been allowed to leave the leash at home. Most of the supporters were pet owners and the main opposition came from residents of Dover Shores.

But in the end, it was decided that a dog park is not appropriate, because county- and city-owned North Star Beach is designated as a tidelands, according to Nancy Beard, recreation superintendent who wrote the staff report to the commission. Because of that designation, the land’s lease stipulates that it must be used for aquatic activity.

The commission then voted 7 to 0 to make no recommendation to the City Council and instead begin again to look for a suitable place.

“The dog park is not dead,” Beard said. “The commission is anxious to find an appropriate location in Newport Beach.”

She said the proponents of the specialized park vow to scour the city in search of another site.
