A third-quarter shoving match seemed to provide the spark for the Atlanta Hawks, who responded by surging to a 19-point lead and holding on to defeat New York, 114-102, Friday night at Atlanta, ending the Knicks’ six-game winning streak.

“I think we made some kind of statement,” Atlanta’s Craig Ehlo said.

The confrontation began with 8:33 to play in the third quarter when John Starks was called for an offensive foul, an elbow to the jaw that knocked down Ehlo.

Starks and Ehlo got into a shoving match, as did Kevin Willis and Patrick Ewing, with all four players drawing technical fouls.
